Pelican Sound residents have long had a distinctive way to reach Lovers Key State Park: board the complimentary shuttle at the River Club dock, follow the Estero River toward the bay, and make the boat ride part of the day.
That amenity did not suddenly become more useful because the destination moved or the route changed. Its value increased because the driving alternative became more complicated.
In July 2026, Lovers Key is working through limited parking near its boat ramp, the park’s internal tram service has been discontinued, and construction activity continues around the Big Carlos Pass Bridge. Each change is manageable on its own. Together, they alter the practical calculation for a summer beach day.
For Pelican Sound residents, the shuttle now does more than provide a pleasant ride. It removes several points of friction before the day even begins.
The access equation changed at Lovers Key
The most immediate update involves parking. In a notice effective June 11, 2026, Florida State Parks said the Lovers Key boat ramp would be partially closed for improvements beginning in July. Parking is expected to be limited during that partial closure.
That matters during summer weekends, which are also the primary operating days for Pelican Sound’s July shuttle schedule.
Driving remains an option. Lovers Key is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset, and the park charges $8 per vehicle. Yet securing a parking space is only the first step in reaching the beach.
The park has also discontinued its internal tram service as part of long-term resilience planning. Visitors entering through the main parking area now reach the beach on foot or by bicycle through one of two routes:
- Mid-Beach is approximately 1,000 feet from Parking Lot #1.
- South Beach is approximately one-half mile from Parking Lot #1.
Those distances are reasonable for many visitors, but they change what must be considered when packing chairs, towels, water and beach gear. They can also shape the plan when hosting out-of-town guests or arranging a shorter morning at the Gulf.
The exact distance between Pelican Sound’s boat landing and the sand is not confirmed in the available public information. The defensible advantage is simpler: residents using the shuttle do not have to manage the drive, the main parking search and the walk from Parking Lot #1 as one continuous arrival process.
That is the hidden reason this established amenity feels more valuable in summer 2026.
The practical shift: The shuttle has not changed as much as the alternative has. Limited parking, the end of tram service and an active bridge work zone have raised the convenience value of starting at the River Club.
Big Carlos Pass adds another variable to the drive
The road approach is changing, too.
As of the July 1, 2026 Big Carlos Pass Bridge project update, vehicles were already using the new fixed-span bridge. The bridge is open, but the surrounding project remained active. Drivers were advised to expect intermittent lane closures during daytime and overnight hours, reduced speeds, construction vehicles and workers entering the roadway.
The approximately $90.8 million project was still expected to reach completion in summer 2026.
This is not a reason to avoid Lovers Key by car. It is a reason to plan the drive with a little more flexibility. The new bridge is designed to improve access over time, with bicycle lanes, a six-foot sidewalk, a ten-foot shared-use path and a future parking area providing access to Lovers Key on the southeast side.
Once those elements are complete, land access may become easier. For now, Pelican Sound residents have a useful alternative that begins inside their own community and bypasses the changing road approach entirely.
What the July shuttle schedule actually allows
The adopted typical operating schedule gives residents a clear framework for planning. In July, Boat One is generally scheduled to run on Saturdays and Sundays.

The adopted schedule also states that times may change by calendar year. Residents should confirm the current club schedule and any reservation procedure before heading to the River Club.
The summer pattern rewards a deliberate plan. A morning departure can support time at the beach before the strongest part of the afternoon. A later departure can work for residents who prefer a shorter outing. Return timing should be confirmed before disembarking so the day is organized around the boat rather than assumptions about service frequency.
Residents who prefer the ride itself can also remain aboard. Pelican Sound Golf & River Club describes a roughly two-hour round trip along the Estero River, with river scenery and possible dolphin sightings along the way.
That option is particularly useful when the goal is to spend time on the water without carrying beach equipment or building the day around a long stay ashore.
Lovers Key is still an active summer destination
Construction and access changes do not mean the park has gone quiet.
Lovers Key offers more than two miles of Gulf beach as well as swimming, shelling, fishing and wildlife viewing. Its land-based recreation includes more than five miles of multiuse trails, including the Black Island Trail.
The park’s July 2026 calendar also shows how much is still happening. Programs listed as of July 15 include:
- Beach and Estuary Walk on July 17: A ranger-led look at the shoreline and estuary.
- Junior Ranger Program on July 18: An educational program focused on the park’s natural and cultural resources, recreation and service.

The Welcome and Discovery Center is another option for a separate park visit. Published sources currently disagree on whether it operates Tuesday through Saturday or Wednesday through Saturday, although both list limited hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Confirm the current schedule directly before making it the centerpiece of a trip.
A land-arrival day may still be the better choice when the primary goal is exploring Black Island Trail or visiting the Discovery Center. The shuttle is strongest when the plan centers on the river ride, Gulf access or a focused beach outing.
A smarter Pelican Sound summer routine
Residents searching for things to do near Pelican Sound Estero summer 2026 do not necessarily need a new destination. A familiar amenity can create a better routine when it is used with the current access conditions in mind.
A practical shuttle day starts with five checks:

- Ask about the current boarding process. Do not assume availability or reservation requirements.
- Match the outing to the return times. Decide whether the goal is a round-trip river cruise or time ashore.
- Pack for limited services. Bring water, sun protection and the beach items needed for the planned length of stay.
- Review park updates. Conditions at Lovers Key can change while ramp improvements and nearby bridge work continue.
The River Club also supports a second water-based routine for days when the shuttle is not scheduled. Pelican Sound provides residents with one- and two-person kayaks and paddleboards, along with life jackets, paddles and a soft-sand launch near the docks. Those amenities keep the Estero River accessible even when a Lovers Key trip does not fit the weekend schedule.
For residents with their own boats, the riverfront facilities include a private launch, 125 dry-storage spaces, wash bays and a fish-cleaning station. Together, these features show why Pelican Sound’s river access should be understood as a connected amenity system rather than a single shuttle ride.
The shuttle has been getting more operational attention, too
There is another layer to the story that is less visible during a day at the beach.
On September 17, 2025, the Village of Estero adopted Ordinance 2025-07, approving permanent mooring for two Pelican Sound shuttle boats at the River Club, subject to conditions and required outside-agency approvals. Pelican Sound explained during the review that overnight mooring could reduce unnecessary repositioning trips along the Estero River.
Public records available for this article do not confirm the final status of every outside approval, so it would be premature to describe the permanent-mooring process as fully complete. The local action still demonstrates sustained attention to how the service operates.
The review also formalized detailed safeguards. These include a maximum five-mph policy in a designated area near the mouth of the river, yielding to kayaks and paddleboards, sounding a horn at blind turns, GPS speed monitoring, onboard cameras and U.S. Coast Guard-certified operators.
For residents, the larger point is not the ordinance language. It is that the amenity is tied to an active operating framework designed around the shared use of the Estero River.
A community amenity whose context has changed
Pelican Sound’s shuttle has always offered something difficult to duplicate: a direct connection between the River Club, the Estero River and Lovers Key State Park.
Summer 2026 makes that connection easier to appreciate.
Lovers Key’s discontinued tram service has increased the walk required after parking. July boat-ramp work is limiting parking. Big Carlos Pass remains an active construction area even though vehicles are using the new bridge. Against that backdrop, a scheduled boat leaving from inside Pelican Sound carries more practical value than it did when every part of the driving alternative was easier.
